☆ Chick-fil-A will stop using its ‘no antibiotics ever’ label on chicken

Citing diminishing chicken supply, Chick-fil-A will back off its pledge never to serve chicken that was fed antibiotics, and instead it will embrace a looser industry standard: “no antibiotics important to human medicine.” Chick-fil-A first announced that it would abandon antibiotics in 2014. The change comes after Tyson, America’s biggest poultry company, last summer ended its eight-year-pledge to keep antibiotics out of its chicken. That particular disease is not treatable with antibiotics, but other diseases that can kill chickens do respond to antibiotics. In addition to chickens’ health, antibiotics are particularly important to promote poultry growth — particularly for items like large broiler chickens. It noted in that 2007 publication that “an appropriate balance should be struck between animal health needs and human health considerations – human health being, however, paramount compared to animal health.”

Wall Street returned to its winning ways this week — and Nvidia 's blowout earnings report Wednesday night was a big reason why. It was a muted week for macroeconomic data, but we did get a slightly better-than-expected January existing home sales report on Thursday. A rare North Atlantic right whale was found dead this week off the coast of Georgia, the second fatality in recent weeks involving the critically endangered species, the federal agency that monitors the oceans said. The whale that died was the female calf of the North Atlantic right whale No. 4340, also known as Pilgrim, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in a statement on Thursday. The agency was notified on Tuesday that there was a dead whale floating offshore near Savannah, Ga. The whale, born in 2022, was identified after an aerial survey team from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute searched and found the carcass on Wednesday about 20 miles off Tybee Island, which is about 18 miles east of Savannah.

We label these works children’s classics, but really they’re a literary wake-up call, as books like Carlo Collodi’s “The Adventures of Pinocchio” and E.B. Roberto Piumini, a legendary Italian author of children’s stories, wrote such a book in 1987. Considered his masterpiece, GLOWRUSHES (NYRB Kids, 128 pp., paperback, $13.99, ages 9 to 12) is now out in a graceful English translation by Leah Janeczko that captures the sprezzatura and spare elegance of the original. Ostensibly, Sakumat’s assignment is to decorate the interior realm that Madurer can never leave. In truth, his colors and lines must provide the windows to an outside world that Madurer’s medical destiny cruelly denies him.

New York CNN —Former ABC News anchors T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach are on-air partners again, this time with a new podcast. The pair are joining iHeartMedia to host a new “highly anticipated” weekly podcast, called “Amy & T.J.” beginning December 5, the company announced Wednesday. It’s the “first time Robach and Holmes speak publicly since their own names became a part of the headlines,” a released teased. The duo was taken off the air, and later released from the network, following a report of an undisclosed romantic relationship earlier this year. Last December, photos surfaced in the Daily Mail showing the pair apparently engaged in a romantic relationship.

CNN —“Gremlins” turned a benign Christmas holiday into a snowy backdrop for cartoonish murders. Holiday horror films work for the same reason holiday tearjerkers do: There’s already an “emotional foundation” with holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, DuPée said. Higher chicken prices should improve earnings at top producers Tyson (TSN.N) and Pilgrim's Pride (PPC.O), but will pinch consumers' pockets as they try to save money by turning away from higher-end proteins. Arkansas-based Tyson, which sells all three types of meat, had to deal with a glut of chicken after earning massive profits when meat prices soared during the COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S. government last month trimmed its estimate for 2023 chicken production from August due in part to expectations for lower chick placements. "We've seen some recovery in chicken prices and we've seen some consumer prices start to level off," Tyson CFO John R. Tyson told investors last month. Further increases in chicken prices could threaten demand, said Adam Speck, senior commodity analyst for Gro Intelligence.

Dianne Feinstein makes news these days for the health challenges that seem to keep mounting, but behind her story is another, which few pay attention to. When I watched the news clip of Senator Feinstein starting to give prepared comments on an $823 billion military budget, when all she needed to do was say “aye,” I felt the ache of familiarity. Senator Feinstein, we’ve been told, had recently recovered from encephalitis, which she got from shingles, and which can result in cognitive issues. They know the looks, the behavior; they live with all of it day after day, month after month. Let me tell you something about the fear of cognitive decline: It unleashes a torrent of emotions in caregivers.
